Although our backpack is not made using 100% recycled materials, we have made sure to use the most environmentally friendly options available.
We have started with 100% recycled 600D polyester fabric. To add additional durability and reduce the amount of chemicals used we have coated this rPET fabric on both sides with TPU, to be more specific biodegradable TPU.
Biodegradable TPU is an advanced material that boasts impressive sustainability credentials. We do not generally refer to our TPU as biodegradable TPU as we feel it is slightly misleading. But it is important to know that we use the most sustainable TPU available using organic blocs in molecule chains. And although it is true that it can biodegrade in 3-5 years, we feel this is misleading as you wouldn’t be able to do this in your home compost. This would only happen in industrial composting facilities which there is currently a limited number of in the UK.
Historically dry bags are made using PVC, which is the most environmentally damaging plastic. Greenpeace have referred to PVC as ‘The Poison Plastic’ as the PVC lifecycle from production to disposal results in the release of toxic chlorine-based chemicals whose damage cannot be overstated. These chemicals build up in the water, air and food chain and have deadly consequences.
So we feel that for every PVC bag we can stop being sold is a win for mother nature.
We continue to work with our manufacturers to search for the most sustainable materials.
